What Is Karyotyping ?

Chromosome analysis (karyotyping) is the microscopic examination of chromosomes and can detect changes in the number and structure.

Karyotypes are prepared using a standardized staining procedure that reveals structural features of each chromosome.

They are prepared from mitotic cells that have been arrested in metaphase, when chromosomes assume their most condensed conformation.

Metaphase chromosomes: Distinctive banding patterns and chromosome pairs can be arranged into a standardized format known as a karyotype.
